The One Question That Settles It: Is There an Edge?

Both of these produce the same first impression — a warmer color around the pupil, a cooler one further out. So looking at the colors gets you nowhere. Look at the boundary between them instead.

  • Central heterochromia has an edge. Two distinct colors meet at a border you could trace with a fingertip.
  • Hazel has no edge. The inner and outer colors melt into each other, and you cannot say where one stops.

That is the whole test. Everything below is about applying it when the answer is not instant. If you would rather be walked through it, the heterochromia test asks the same question in three steps.

Why Hazel Keeps Getting Claimed as Heterochromia

Hazel is not a flat color — it is a zoned one. A typical hazel iris runs brown, gold or copper near the pupil, green or olive through the mid-iris, and often a darker rim at the outer edge. That is a genuinely two-tone eye, so calling it "two colors in one iris" is a fair description of what you see.

But heterochromia means a discrete difference in coloration, not a gradient. Hazel's zones are the normal way melanin is distributed in a low-to-medium pigment iris: concentrated near the pupil, thinning outward. The colors are blending because they are a continuum, not two separate things sitting next to each other.

This is why informal counts of central heterochromia run high. It is the most-claimed pattern and the most-misassigned one.

The Second Tell: Does It Move in Different Light?

If the boundary call is genuinely too close, use lighting as a tiebreaker.

Hazel is light-dependent in a way a heterochromatic ring is not:

  • Bright outdoor light scatters off the low-melanin mid-iris and pulls the whole eye green.
  • Warm indoor light feeds the brown inner zone and pulls the eye brown.
  • Green, gold or rust clothing visibly tilts the balance.

So a hazel eye does not just look two-toned — it looks like a different two-tone eye depending on where you are standing. A real central ring holds its shape and its border in every one of those conditions. The color may look warmer or cooler, but the edge stays put.

They Are Not Mutually Exclusive

Worth saying plainly, because the "vs" framing hides it: central heterochromia is a pattern and hazel is a color. They answer different questions, so you can have both.

A hazel iris with a genuinely sharp-edged gold ring is a hazel eye with central heterochromia. The base color still sits where it always did on the eye color rarity chart — the pattern rides on top of it. This is also why "central heterochromia" is not an entry on any rarity chart: it is not a color, and putting it in the ranking would be a category error.

Edge Cases That Fool People

  • Limbal rings. The dark border at the outer edge of the iris is a normal anatomical feature, not a second color. Central heterochromia is about the inner ring, around the pupil.
  • Iris fibers and crypts. The spoke-like texture radiating from the pupil creates light and dark streaks in most irises. Streaks are not a zone.
  • Pupil size. In dim light a dilated pupil covers much of the inner zone and can erase an apparent ring entirely. Judge in daylight.
  • Flash photography. On-camera flash flattens the iris and blows out exactly the low-melanin areas you are trying to read. Use daylight.
  • A new ring. If an inner zone appeared in adulthood rather than having always been there, that is not a labelling question — see an eye doctor, especially alongside pain, redness, light sensitivity or a vision change.

Settling It

Take one photo: daylight, out of direct sun, close enough that a single iris fills much of the frame, no filters, looking straight at the lens. Zoom all the way in on the meeting point of the two colors.

If you can see where the inner color ends, it is central heterochromia. If you cannot, it is hazel — and the more useful next question becomes which hazel, since the warm-to-green balance is what determines whether it reads as brown, green or genuinely in-between. Running the same photo through an eye color test will name the undertones the ring is made of, which is usually what people were actually trying to find out.
